May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month!
During this month, we acknowledge Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders for enriching the history of the United States and influencing its future.
This annual celebration came about in 1978 when President Jimmy Carter signed into law a Joint Resolution of the Congress of the United States designating a week in May for the celebration of Asian and Pacific Islanders' culture and heritage. The week-long celebration was expanded by Congress to a month in 1990. In 1992, May was annually designated as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month under the George H. W. Bush administration. To learn more, click here.
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is celebrated every May in honor of two key historical events that happened during this month of the year. May 7, 1843 marks the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States and May 10 is Golden Spike Day, which marked the first transcontinental railroad completed by nearly 20,000 Chinese migrants in 1869.
